Picnic, plant exchange and bird walk June 3, 2014

at Cleveland Metroparks Lagoon Picnic Area

WCAS members and friends enjoyed a perfect June evening at Lagoon Picnic Area for our annual picnic, plant exchange and bird walk.  A pair of Eastern Phoebes shuttled back and forth to feed young in their nest in the picnic shelter. The plant exchange featured interesting tubers for "Voodoo lily or "corpse plant," (Amorphophallus Konjac)  and lovely native cardinal flowers, along with a variety of unusual plants and garden favorites.  During the bird walk Nancy Howell and Terry Gorges rescued a Canada Goose entangled in fishing line.  Tiny new frogs animated the picnic area on the north area of the lagoon, where birders got great views of a Pileated Woodpecker and four Green Herons silhouetted in tall bare trees.  The call of a Common Nighthawk made the day.
