WCAS field trip to Lakeview Park, Lorain, Ohio

Lakeview Park offers views of Lake Erie, Lorain Harbor and breakwalls. With the Rose Café just ready to open after renovations, we were able to bird from inside as well as outside, enjoying wonderful views through the windows. Traci Grandel told the history of the park, how it was donated in the early 20th century as a green space on a lakefront dominated by factories and rail. The Rose Café is a modern renovation of the original bathhouse, and stands on the foundation that survived the 1924 Lorain Tornado. On the lake, Red-breasted Mergansers were everywhere in the water and in the sky. In the park we enjoyed a pair of American Crows and a pair of Cooper’s Hawks. Gary Gerrone led our birding.
