Gull Field Trip to Perkins Beach and
East 72nd St. Power Plant
Sunday, February 3, 2013
19 species, 18 birders
Leader: Tim Krynak
Snowy weather
and temperatures in the teens put a layer of ice along the Lake Erie
shore. At Perkins Beach
there were only scope views of birds in distant patches of open
water. After savoring
the spectacular view of downtown, birders from Kirtland Bird Club
and from Western Cuyahoga Audubon Society headed east for the power
plant outflow at East 72nd St.
There two Peregrine Falcons surveyed the thousands of gulls
from atop a tall smokestack.
A lone Mute Swan graced the open water.
After the group began to
disperse, birders who waited "five more minutes"
were rewarded with close-up
views of an Iceland Gull.
